Skin
Cancer
Common and
treatable
Skin cancer is the
most common type of cancer in the United States. The two most common
kinds are basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancers. These are
typically treated by carefully removing or destroying the entire cancer in the
skin. In the vast majority of cases, that is all that is needed for
treatment.
The most serious kind of skin cancer is melanoma.
Of the skin lesions physicians evaluate, it is most important to diagnosis melanoma,
since it is cureable if caught early, but can be deadly if
it spreads. Melanoma is usually detected by examination of a suspicious skin lesion
and then confirmed with a biopsy.
